Staying Fit While Pregnant



A big reason I wanted to lose weight in the first place was because I really wanted to have children one day. I didn't want to get to the point where I was ready to have children, and find out that my weight would be an issue. Before getting pregnant, I lost 55 lbs. I always thought, once I got pregnant, that I would just continue on with my normal workouts and healthy eating.

I was clueless as to what pregnancy would do to my body. In the first trimester, I was so tired. I could have slept around the clock if I could have. So the thought of getting up at 4:30 AM to get in my workouts made me sick. I would then try to get in my workouts in the evening. But by that time, after working a long day, I had no energy for a workout. I would start a workout, and find myself dizzy on the couch within 5 minutes.  I was so torn between wanting to stay fit and listening to my body. I knew my pre-pregnancy workouts were too much for my body to handle. I did some light walking in the evening, but that was about all my body could take.

I was also clueless as to how many food aversions I would have. I thought I would be able to suck it up and force myself to eat what I used to. In my first trimester, the thought of eating a vegetable or any sort of meat made me want to puke. Wasn't happening. If I would have forced myself, I really think I would have been physically ill. I ate what I could, drank protein shakes to get in extra protein and nutrients and juiced when I could. I lost 10 lbs in the first trimester.

I also was clueless on how awesome I would feel in the second trimester. My energy is back and my appetite is the size of the universe. I am able to do T25 again, go to the gym and lift with my husband, go on long walks and do some prenatal yoga at home. My husband and I went to the gym last night and did 10 minutes of speed walking and then lifted shoulders and triceps. I was amazed at how STRONG I felt and the fact I had the energy to complete the workout without having to sit down and take a break.

My biggest struggle at the moment is saying NO to the 'See Food' Diet. When I SEE FOOD, I instantly want to eat it ALL. I have really tried to not let myself get into the mindset of 'eating for two', but its hard when I feel like I could eat for a family of five. So hungry all the time! During the first trimester, you do not need any additional calories. During the second and third trimester, you only need an additional 300 calories a day. That isn't a lot! 300 calories is a large class of orange juice or a greek yogurt with granola. I seem to do fine all day, but in the evenings, I want to eat everything in my kitchen. I am doing my best to eat a larger dinner so I can fill up on clean healthy foods. Once about 8 pm hits, my sweet tooth is hungry for chocolate and sour gummy worms (which is weird because I have never really had a sweet tooth before). My trick is brushing my teeth and getting in bed! Getting away from the kitchen seems to help me get my mind off of food!

After losing 55 lbs, it has been really hard to adjust to gaining weight. I try to remind myself, it is healthy to gain weight during pregnancy. Its not all fat, its a growing baby, extra blood, the placenta and extra fluid.  Changing my mindset has truly been the hardest thing for me to do. But, I am learning! I never thought it would be difficult to stay on track with clean eating and exercise while pregnant. I actually thought it would be easier knowing you were supporting an extra life!

Just because it is difficult, doesn't mean it is impossible! I have asked my husband to help keep me accountable throughout this pregnancy. He is so good about working out with me, so it helps me keep on track! Doing my best to listen to my body, while pushing myself to continue to work hard.

20 Weeks


How far along are you?  I am 20 weeks and 2 days! Crazy that I am already to the halfway point of this pregnancy! 

How big is the baby? 10 inches and 10.5 ounces, the size of a banana! The baby is now measured from head to toe now, rather than head to bottom!


"Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. He's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — about the size of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby's legs are curled up against his torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of his head to his bottom — the "crown to rump" measurement. After 20 weeks, he's measured from head to toe.)

He's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for his digestive system. He's also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in his bowels, and you'll see it in his first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery).

Total Weight Gain: I am up 2 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight now. Seeing the weight gain at the doctor's office yesterday didn't make me feel good! But, I keep reminding myself that its healthy for me and the baby to gain weight (healthy weight!). Really working to make sure that I am eating healthy and exercising still.


How I’m feeling: I have been feeling good lately! I still have the usual pregnancy aches and pains, but overall feeling really good. I have been extra hungry lately. I feel like I could eat all day and all night and never get full. Doing my best to eat without over doing it. I refuse to think I am eating for two. Doctor said I only need an extra 300 calories a day, which isn't much! Really trying to not let the weight gain get to my head. I just feel so huge (even though I am no where near how big my tummy will get!). Struggling to not let it upset me!

Maternity clothes: I basically live in my maternity clothes now! Most regular shirts are too short on me now!

Favorite workouts: Still doing modified T25 and going on long walks in the evening with my hubby. Going to start incorporating more weight lifting this week!

Stretch Marks: None yet, thankfully! I am using bio oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter cream for stretch marks.

Cravings: Corn on the cob and sugar. I have never had a sweet tooth before, but now I want to eat ALL THE SUGAR!



Sleep:  My snoogle has been a lifesaver. Makes sleeping on my side much more comfortable! I have been sleeping really good lately, no complaints! Weird dreams are getting less weird. Lots of dreams about a baby girl...maybe Baby Dukes is a girl?
Best moment this weekSeeing the baby yawn and wiggle around on the Sonogram. I loved getting to see the heart beat. So amazing that you can see all four chambers of the heart on the screen. Loved it!

MovementBaby was pretty lazy early this week, but after our doctor's appointment, it has been kicking like crazy. I am starting to feel the movements with my hand now, not just internally.
Food aversions: Some meats still. But generally enjoying food these days...maybe a little too much!

What I Miss: Being able to workout like I used to. Tough getting so tired and having aches and pains. 
What I’m looking forward to: Our gender reveal party on Sunday! I tried to peek at the sonogram and see if I could see anything, but I couldn't. The nurse wrote the gender in a card and we gave it to the family members throwing the party for us. I always thought Baby Dukes was a boy, but now I am thinking its maybe a girl. I have no clue! Can't wait to finally know what we are having. More than anything though, just happy our baby is healthy!

18 & 19 Weeks


How far along are you?  I am 19 weeks and 1 day today! Finally starting to feel like I am pregnant and not just chubby! I always am so surprised when people notice I am pregnant. Sometimes I forget that my belly is more visible these days! I love it though. Can't believe next week is already the halfway point. I feel like I have been pregnant forever, but I am still surprised how fast it has gone! First trimester went by so slow because I was so anxious to tell the world that I was pregnant. Second trimester has been going so fast! I just cannot wait to meet our sweet baby! Makes me cry just thinking about it! I am such a hormonal mess haha!

How big is the baby? 6 inches and 8.5 ounces, the size of a mango!

19 Weeks

"Your baby's sensory development is exploding! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear your voice now, so don't be shy about reading aloud, talking to her, or singing a happy tune if the mood strikes you.
Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of an heirloom tomato. Her arms and legs are in the right proportions to each other and the rest of her body now. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. Total Weight Gain: I am 1 lb away from my pre-pregnancy weight since I lost weight in the first trimester.

Vitamins: I am taking these Prenatals about three times a week and I am drinking Shakeology on the other days. 

Stretch Marks: None yet, thankfully! I am using bio oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter cream for stretch marks.

How I’m feeling: I have been feeling really good the past two weeks. No cramping, heartburn or headaches! Did wake up with fuzzy vision, dizzy and a massive headache today though! Doctor made sure Baby Dukes still had a strong heartbeat today and checked my blood pressure. Hoping this migraine goes away and I can go back to feeling great! Maybe this comes along with being pregnant, but my anxiety is pretty high lately. I pray everyday for a happy and healthy baby, but I can't help but worry about the baby and how it's doing. I feel so much relief after each appointment when I hear the heartbeat. Maybe its a mom thing? Maybe I worry too much? Combination of the two most likely! 

Maternity clothes: Loving maternity clothes. Amazing how much better I feel in them. They make me feel pregnant rather than fat.

Favorite workouts: Still doing modified T25 and going on long walks in the evening with my hubby.


Sleep:  Still loving my snoogle! Been sleeping really good lately and have been sleeping through the whole night without needing bathroom breaks. Last weekend I actually slept in until 8:30 am, which was late for me! 
Best moment this week: Feeling the baby kick and hearing its heartbeat again today. I wish I could listen to it's heartbeat all day long, there is no sweeter sound!
MovementI can feel the baby move everyday now. Very active in the mid morning and around dinner time.
Food aversions: Still meat. I have been eating more chicken though and am feeling less grossed out by beef.

Cravings: Corn on the cob, steamed artichokes and gluten free chocolate chip cookies. If I could have corn on the cob for breakfast, lunch and dinner...I totally would.

What I Miss: Being able to move! I have a tough time getting up off the couch lately! Also really missing being able to sleep on my back and stomach. 
What I’m looking forward to: I am looking forward to our appointment next Wednesday! We get to do the gender ultrasound. We are then doing a gender reveal party to find out the gender together with our families! Going to be tough waiting a few days after the appointment to find out the gender! I am guessing its a boy, but as long as our sweet baby is healthy and happy, we will be happy no matter the gender!

Baby Buys: We got a crib! We have not set it up yet, but we are looking forward to it! We are slowly registering and trying to figure out which items we actually need and which we don't. Once we find out the gender, I am sure we will start setting up the nursery! Can't wait! We walked around Babies R Us this last weekend for several hours. So many different products, it was almost overwhelming. I could look at baby stuff forever though, its so cute!

Dream BIG


This morning, I shared my biggest dream with my team of coaches. You know what is scary about telling people your dreams? It makes you accountable. Those dreams then become goals. Those goals then become plans. Crazy how losing 55 lbs has made me feel invincible. I feel like I now have this insane confidence, knowing I can do literally anything I want. No dream is too big. No goal is too far out. If I want something, I am going to make it happen.

The point is...Dream BIG and then dream BIGGER. If you have the passion and you are willing to work hard, NOTHING is out of reach.

I have found my calling and I am going to run with it. I am going to allow myself to dream big and chase down my goals.

I can do anything. Possibilities are endless. Passion is power.

Time to take action!

17 Weeks Pregnant



How far along are you?  I am 17 weeks today! 161 more days until we get to meet our sweet baby. Crazy to think this is my last week in the fourth month! Next week, I will be able to say I am five months pregnant! That's crazy! The bigger I get, the more real it gets for both my husband and I. I find myself reading my pregnancy books and lots of blogs about pregnancy and birth.

How big is the baby? 5 inches and 5 ounces, the size of an onion!


More about week 17 from Baby Center:


"Your baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — her lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and she's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. She can move her joints, and her sweat glands are starting to develop."


Total Weight Gain: Still down 5lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. My tummy is getting bigger each week and is starting to feel heavy, so I do think some of this weight loss could be from losing muscle mass.

Stretch Marks: None yet, thankfully! I am using bio oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter cream for stretch marks.

How I’m feeling: I have had a lot of round ligament pain this week with heartburn. Seems like almost every time I eat, my upper tummy expands quite a bit and I get some heart burn. This is TMI, but oh well :) Along with the heartburn, I find myself getting really gassy in the evenings. My poor husband! Tummy rumbles like crazy. So gross and so uncomfortable! Also, I find that my baby bump gets bigger throughout the day, I am sure its just from eating/drinking! Other than those gross things, I am feeling pretty good! My energy is up for the most part and I am loving it! Last week, I finally gave in and started drinking coffee again. My doctor said I am fine having 8 ounces of black coffee each day. I have been making it in the morning, letting it cool and pouring it over ice with some almond milk and vanilla extract. I drink a little in the morning and save the rest for an afternoon pick-me-up! The only bad thing about coffee is that I find myself drinking less water throughout the day. Gotta work on that! My appetite is back in full force. I find myself starving, then eating two bites of something and instantly feeling really full! Definitely trying to eat smaller portions more often!

Maternity clothes: Can I just say one thing? Maternity clothes ROCK! Only problem is...they are so hard to find! My husband and I go shopping almost ever weekend lately looking for maternity clothes. There is only one store at our local mall that has maternity clothes and they have a tiny selection and are ridiculously expensive. I refuse to spend $80 on a shirt that will only fit me for a few months! I was able to find a couple cheaper items at Target and Marshall's. So many people tell me to just buy regular clothes in a bigger size. The only problem with that is that the shirts are usually too big everywhere but the tummy area and too short. Last thing I want is for everyone to see the bottom of my belly hanging out in my maternity pants! Also, I have no idea how big my tummy is going to get, so its hard to buy clothes right now because I am afraid they won't fit in a month or two! I am learning to  deal with my small wardrobe and keep reminding myself that I only have to deal with it for a few more months!

Favorite workouts: My doctor has told me to keep my heart rate below 160, so I am doing my best. I have a pretty high resting heart rate, so I struggle to do almost any high intensity cardio. I have been loving T25, doing the modified version and I have been doing prenatal yoga at home too. My husband and I try to go on walks after work in the evenings too!


Sleep:  My Snoogle is officially my favorite pregnancy purchase thus far. My husband might kill me for sharing this, but he loves the Snoogle too and was even complaining that they don't make Snoogles for men! It is SO comfortable to sleep with! I have been doing my best to sleep on my side, rather than my back. The last few nights, I have been sleeping much better. Still having really weird dreams, but thankfully I am having less nightmares. The other night, I had a dream I was doing weird obstacle competitions over the ocean with the cast of American Idol. Strange, but I might add I came in second place in my dream :) Can you tell we watch too much reality TV? I am still waking up pretty early. This is the first time in my life that I wake up before my alarm during the work week and that I wake up before 7AM on the weekends. Can't complain! I am enjoying waking up early on the weekends so I can get my Lifetime Movie fix before my husband wakes up!
Best moment this weekFeeling the baby move throughout the week. Still hard for me to differentiate between stomach rumbles and baby movements, but I am learning!
MovementI have felt movement a couple times this last week. Hard to tell if I am not paying attention to feeling the movements!
Food aversions: Still meat. I can do a little bit of meat if it is in a sandwich or salad, but that is about it. 

Cravings: Gluten free macaroni and cheese. 

I had a new all time low this week. I had a really bad craving for this specific macaroni and cheese. If you are allergic to gluten, you will know how difficult it is to find GOOD gluten free macaroni. The deli at our grocery store carries really good fresh gluten free macaroni and cheese. Not healthy at all, but I allow this in moderation. When my husband and I went grocery shopping on Sunday, I had my mind set on macaroni for lunch. Went to the store only to find that they didn't have it. My sweet husband even asked the deli employee to double check that there was none in the back. When the man came out and told us they were out, I cried. Yep, I wasn't lying when I said this was an all time low. I cried in the middle of the grocery store because they did not have my macaroni. I then started laughing, while still crying, because I could not believe I was actually crying. Sometimes I feel like I literally have NO control over my emotions! Now, my husband jokingly reminds me each time we go grocery shopping, not to cry if they are out of something haha. Gotta love these pregnancy hormones!

What I Miss: Being able to sit up normally. I feel like such an old lazy woman each time I have to ask my husband to help me off the couch! I get so dizzy when I stand straight up! I always forget that I need to get up a little slower. Also, really craving foods I shouldn't eat like deli meat, certain cheeses and gluten. I find myself craving the foods I can't eat!

What I’m looking forward to: I am looking forward to finding out the gender next month! We have started to look at nursery furniture too (crib, dresser, rocking chair, etc). Really looking forward to getting everything and setting up the nursery!

Baby Buys: So far, the only thing we have purchased for the baby is a stroller. After lots of researching, asking other moms and looking at the store, we decided on The Graco Relay Jogger. I initially was not planning on buying a jogger because they are heavy and bulky. But, the more I talked to other moms, they told me I would regret that decision. I initially was set on getting the Bob stroller, but when we found this Graco stroller, we realized they were very similar, yet this one was $100 dollars cheaper (and we got an extra 20% off). I love the color of this stroller, it moves so smoothly and it had great reviews. For the bigger items, we are planning on buying gender neutral. We are hoping to have more than one child, so I want to buy quality items that can be used for many years to come!

The more I start researching baby items, the more overwhelmed I get. Can you say EXPENSIVE?! Yikes. I keep feeling like I really need to start slowly buying the big ticket items, that way I can spread out the expenses, rather than feeling like I will have a long list to purchase right before the baby arrives. I am clearly a newbie, do people usually starting accumulating baby things soon? Or do most people wait until after their baby shower? Help!

Milestone: We signed up for Childbirth classes! Thankfully, a coworker recommended looking into them and signing up soon because they were almost all full! Class isn't until August, but we are really looking forward to it!

I'm Pregnant!

I'M PREGNANT! 

Tom and I are really excited to expand our family. We got married December 7th and we knew we wanted to expand our family soon after getting married. After we got home from our Honeymoon in the Bahamas, I started to feel verrrry tired. I thought my mono from the fall may had come back. I took a pregnancy test right after we got home and sadly it was negative. A few weeks later, I realized I was 5 days late. I knew I would be slightly bummed if it was negative again, so I decided to hold off for a few days. That Sunday, I decided to pick up a test at the store. It was one of the ones that blatantly say "Pregnant" or "Not Pregnant". I took the test and Tom came into the bathroom with me and we stared at the test together. It felt like we waited forever for the test to give us an answer. "Pregnant". Tom and I looked at each other and I am pretty sure I just screamed. And screamed. And ran around our apartment...and screamed some more (happy screams of course). I was kind of in disbelief, so I decided to take another test, then run to the store to buy 5 more tests. Of course, I took them all....and they were all positive.

Happiness. That's all I can use to describe the feeling. Tom and I are going to be parents! Baby Dukes is due October 14th 2014. 

I have always wanted children and I feel so blessed to have children with my soul mate. I still have to pinch myself sometimes because I am over the moon about being pregnant. This little baby is so loved already!


The first trimester went by really slow for me. I was wanting to tell the entire world we were expecting, but knew it was better to wait until after the 12 week mark.  At 8 weeks, we got to go to the doctor and see our sweet baby on an ultrasound. At 10 weeks, I was feeling stressed and nervous about the pregnancy, so I went in to the doctor and I got to hear the baby's heart beat. Oh my, the most beautiful sound I have ever heard! I cry just thinking about it! At 12 weeks, we went back in for an ultrasound again. Amazing how much a baby grows and changes each week. At 8 weeks, the baby looked like a little gummy bear and by 12 weeks, it looked like an actual baby. At the 12 week appointment, the baby was moving around like crazy. So cool to see the baby move around, because at that point I could not feel any movement.

As of today, I am 16 weeks and 3 days pregnant. I am showing much more than I expected and as I am writing this, I just felt my sweet baby move for the first time. I keep pausing waiting for the baby to move again!

I have been a loyal reader of And Her Little Dog Too, and when she was pregnant, she documented each week. I find myself reading her blog each week to see what to expect. Such a great way to document your pregnancy and remember all of the little moments! I feel like I have been pregnant forever, but I know this time will go by so fast...and I want to remember every second of it!

How far along are you?  I am 16 weeks and 3 days.

How big is the baby? 4.5 inches and 3.5 ounces, the size of an avocado!

More about week 16 from Baby Center:

"Get ready for a growth spurt. In the next few weeks, your baby will double his weight and add inches to his length. Right now, he's about the size of an avocado: 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. His legs are much more developed, his head is more erect than it has been, and his eyes have moved closer to the front of his head. His ears are close to their final position, too. The patterning of his scalp has begun, though his locks aren't recognizable yet. He's even started growing toenails. And there's a lot happening inside as well. For example, his heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, and this amount will continue to increase as your baby continues to develop."

Total Weight Gain: I am actually down 5 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. Lost a total of 10 lbs in the first trimester since I had no appetite. 

Vitamins: I am taking these Prenatals and on the off days, I am drinking Shakeology. My doctor said I was ok to drink Shakeology daily if I wanted to and she actually ordered herself some too!

Stretch Marks: None yet, thankfully! I am using bio oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter cream for stretch marks. If anyone has a good product to help reduce the chance of getting stretch marks, I would love to know!

How I’m feeling: I am feeling pretty good lately. Very tired in my first trimester but now I feel like I am getting my energy back! I do get headaches quite often, heart burn and I feel some cramping due to the fact my uterus is stretching so much. Other than that, I am feeling good! I do feel like I am on an emotional roller coaster though. I cry over almost everything, mostly happy things! It has been a struggle to get used to being bigger and having a tummy. I keep reminding myself, there is a baby in there, it isn't just fat!  I lost 55 lbs and I find myself pretty scared to gain a ton of weight during this pregnancy. Doing my best not to over indulge and to keep up with my exercising.

Maternity clothes: I have been wearing maternity clothes since about 11 weeks. I found my pants were really tight around 8 weeks and I used a belly band with my regular pants for a while. But, I found it didn't stay in place much and it wasn't too comfortable. When I first tried on maternity pants, I was in heaven!!! So comfortable and I love that they smooth over my belly! No bulging! I am still able to wear many of my regular shirts, but I am finding I prefer tighter clothes over loose clothing. A lot of my pre-pregnancy clothes were flowy shirts and now they just make me feel even bigger.

Favorite workouts: My doctor has told me to keep my heart rate below 160, so I am doing my best. I have a pretty high resting heart rate, so I struggle to do almost any high intensity cardio. I bought a Snoogle and it seems to be helping me sleep comfortable on my side. I have been waking up very early though, around 5 am in the morning!
Best moment this week: Hearing the baby's heart beat at our 16 week appointment and feeling the baby move!
Movement: I have felt no movement up until today. Feeling small movements that feel like a muscle twitch in my lower abdomen! Can't wait to feel the baby kick for the first time!
Food aversions: Meat. I can do a little bit of meat if it is in a sandwich or salad, but that is about it. 

Cravings: Loving decaf iced coffee, cheese and sweets! Also...have lots of cravings for Thai Fried Rice!
Belly button in or out: In.
What I Miss: Being able to fully workout and lift weights. I feel pretty limited.

What I’m looking forward to: I am looking forward to finding out the gender next month!

Milestone: Feeling the baby move today!
