G.L.O.P. : Get Lots of Protein!

This is not the most visually appealing meal and the recipe name certainly doesn't help, but I promise, it tastes so good! I found this recipe on Bodybuilding.com.

G.L.O.P. stands for Get Lots of Protein.  This meal is very low in fat and contains a lot of protein.  Great all by itself but could also be used in tacos!

  • 16 oz. fat-free ground turkey breast
  • 1 boil-in-bag instant long-grain brown rice packages
  • 16 oz. jar salsa
  • 8 oz. fat free cottage cheese (small curd)

  1. Cook ground turkey over stove top.
  2. One minutes before turkey is fully cooked, add in salsa and simmer until fully cooked.
  3. Meanwhile, cook rice.
  4. Add rice and cottage cheese to turkey mixture.
  5. Enjoy!
This makes about six servings and is delicious!

    Weight Lifting

In the past few weeks, I have spent more time lifting weights than I have doing cardio.  I used to be a cardio queen.  Hour on the elliptical, followed by fifteen minutes of weight lifting.  My initial goal was to burn fat and lose weight, then I figured I could focus on lifting weights and toning up.  In the last month or so, even though I have not lost any weight, I am noticing changes in my body. My body is starting to get a little bit of definition.  I can see muscles I have never been able to see before.

Maybe I am not losing weight because I am building muscle, which weighs less than fat.  Maybe I truly am plateauing.  Not really sure at this point.  But I am really liking the changes I can see in myself ever since I have started weight lifting more.

I posted this picture above for two reasons.  First was just to show my progress in the last six months.  Second was to prove that lifting weights is not going to make you look like a huge body builder.  I was talking to a girl a few months back about exercising.  She wanted to get in shape again and said she was going to start running a few days a week.  I mentioned lifting weights and she laughed.  She told me she is already muscular and weight lifting will make her look huge.  What girls don't realize is weight lifting can actually help you lose weight.  The more muscle you have on your body, the more calories your body will burn at rest.  Weight lifting will help you lose weight and it won't make you look big and bulky!

My weight has officially been the same for almost two months.  I feel like I am doing everything right, working out, eating healthy, taking supplements and getting enough sleep.  I can't help but feel a little bit frustrated when I step on the scale each week and see no change.  My clothes fit slightly different and I do feel more muscular than I did a couple months ago, but I still get a lot of satisfaction when I see the number on the scale go down.

It is so easy to get discouraged during a weight loss plateau. I plateaued December through almost February and I remember feeling so incredibly frustrated.  Once I broke through the plateau, I lost twenty pounds fairly quickly.  I know I will eventually break through this plateau just as I did the last one, but I am starting to get very impatient.

Tom and I leave for Hawaii in a little over a month.  My goal was to loose another ten pounds before Hawaii, which I initially thought would be very easy.  Each day that goes by, I am getting more nervous that I might not achieve my goal.

Just as I was feeling discouraged, I was given a wake up call.  Tom and I missed our Friday night date, so we went to happy hour on Saturday after our workout.  I used to frequent this particular restaurant when I was overweight and hadn't been there in a while.  We went and sat in the bar and the host followed us to our table with menus.  Before she left, she asked if I used to come in to the restaurant a lot a while ago.  Yes, I used to be a regular. She said, 'You've lost weight, haven't you?".  Why yes, yes I have! She asked how much weight I had lost and told me I looked really great.

Just as I was feeling discouraged by my plateau, I was reminded that I have come a long ways and I should be proud of myself.  There is no finish line when it comes to getting healthy and in shape.  Even when I get to my goal weight, I will always have to workout, eat healthy and maintain my weight.  Fitness isn't something that ever ends, it is a lifestyle.

I will probably have several more plateaus and just as I did the last one, I will break through them all.  Plateaus should make me work harder, not discourage me.  I have come a long way from where I once was and I really need to be proud of myself.

I am going to start mixing up my workouts and my calories again so I can start losing weight again.  I will break through this plateau!

    Gym Motivation of the Day

Happy Monday! I officially leave for Hawaii in less than two months and I have been trying to find more dresses and tank tops to take with me.  Found these two dresses today, together they were $32! I love being able to walk into a store, grab a medium and be totally confident that it will fit me.  Sometimes the mediums are even too big for me! No complaints!

Today is chest and tri's.  I am really working hard to lose the rest of this fat and to build muscle. My weight has been the same for almost two month now, really looking forward to breaking through my plateau!

    Nutrition and Shopping Tips

I have been working out pretty hard lately with Tom.  We have been roughly following the MFT28 on Bodybuilding.com.  This workout plan is pretty intense and we are both very exhausted and sore after each workout.  Throughout this weight loss journey, I have always worked out alone.  Even when Tom and I would go to the gym together, we usually worked out separately.  I am coming to realize how much I enjoy having a workout buddy.  He holds me accountable, helps me with my form, pushes me to do heavier weight and encourages me to do that one last rep.

Lately, Tom and I have been trying to eat a little healthier.  We both realized we have been eating out more than usual and we really want to get back on track.  Tom shared this video with me from Bodybuilding.com last night:

This video is very informative about eating healthy, how to grocery shop and what types of food to buy when  following a plan.

After we went grocery shopping, we did a quick meal prep.  One pound of lean ground turkey, five eggs, one red pepper, Lawry;s seasoning salt and three white sweet potatoes.  This made two lunches for both Tom and I.  We bought all the ingredients for less than ten dollars.  Over 40 grams of protein and under 10 carbohydrates.

Ground Turkey (99% Fat Free), Eggs, Red Pepper and 1/2 a White Sweet Potato
Also, wanted to share that I bought my first pair of shorts this weekend.  I have an upcoming vacation that I will need clothes for warm weather, so I bought these shorts.  I can't even remember the last time I wore a pair of jean shorts!

Bought my first pair of shorts...in years!

    Gym Motivation of the Day

I love this quote! When I first started going to the gym, I felt like I spent more time being jealous of the other fit girls at the gym than I did on actually working out.  Constantly comparing myself to them.  I have come to the realization that I am never going to look like the other girls at the gym.  Why?  Because they aren't me.  I have finally learned that the only competition I have is the person staring back at me in the mirror.  Me, myself and I.  I just need to be better than the person I was yesterday.

    Protein Packed Breakfast

Here is today's breakfast! Two scoops of Vanilla Whey Protein Powder with coffee and a Vanilla Chobani Greek Yogurt.  Totals to 52 grams of protein! Not a bad way to start off the week!
