Home Workouts

Opposite of what I thought, I absolutely LOVE my morning workouts. I feel tired when I wake up, but the second I put my workout clothes on and take a sip of my SuperHD, I am pumped! I have been using P90X all week and I love it. The system incorporates so many different types of exercises and is a good mix between cardio and strength training.

My favorite part about working out in the morning is that I find myself making healthier eating decisions throughout the day.  Knowing I woke up early and sacrificed sleep for a workout doesn't make me want to eat junk food because then I feel like my workout was for nothing!

Even though I am waking up over an hour earlier than usual, I actually feel more energized throughout the day. I am loving my new routine. I love it so much that I have been having dreams about my morning workouts.

Also, I just became a Beachbody Coach (yay!). If you are interested in any of their products, like T25, P90X, Body Beast, Insanity or even their meal replacement shake, Shakeology, let me know! If you choose on of their products HERE, I become your coach for free! I would love to help you along your journey! I won't let you fail!

Happy Gymming!

No Excuse November

Losing weight is a long journey.  Weight loss is a long term goal, doesn't happen overnight.  We all have an idea of how much we would like to weigh or what size of jeans we want to be able to fit into. Sometimes it gets discouraging when the scale doesn't move or we plateau. I have been told that the best way to keep yourself on track is to make short term goals.  Goals that are achievable right now.

I often set short term goals for myself in my head.  I don't usually announce my goals, that way, if I fail, no one will know.  But I really need to keep myself accountable.

So this month, since it is 'No Excuse November', my goal is to workout in the morning before work.

I am so busy after work with the wedding preparations.  Some evenings I don't have time to make it to the gym. I am well aware that this is an excuse, there are 24 hours in the day. If I am too busy in the evenings, then I need to make time during the morning to get my workout in.  If I can get up in the morning before work and workout, I will never have to miss a workout because I am too busy.  The other great thing about this, on the nights I am not busy, I can still go to the gym to get an extra workout in. I have made this goal in the past, but I always wake up and go back to sleep. This time is going to be different because I am going to keep myself accountable!

So there it is. That is my goal for November.

I usually give myself a reward for achieving a goal. But since I am getting married in a month, I think looking amazing in a wedding dress is a reward enough!

What is your 'No Excuse November' goal?

Gluten Free Spaghetti Squash

This meal was a hit! Comfort food made healthy! I love spaghetti squash because it doesn't have much of a flavor, so it takes in the flavor of whatever you put on it.

  • 1 Spaghetti Squash
  • 1 1/2 cups of Ground Turkey
  • 1 1/2 cups of Marinara Sauce
  • 1 cup of Fat Free Cottage Cheese
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Cut spaghetti squash in half. I microwaved mine for about two minutes to soften it a bit so it would be easier to cut.
  3. Drizzle the spaghetti squash with a little bit of olive oil and salt.
  4. Put spaghetti squash on a baking sheet and put it in the oven for 35 minutes.  Squash is done when it is  golden brown.
  5. Meanwhile, cook turkey on medium heat until thoroughly cooked.
  6. Add marinara sauce and cottage cheese to the cooked ground turkey, let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. When the spaghetti squash is done, use a fork to scoop  out half of the spaghetti squash and add it to the turkey mixture and combine.
  8. Fill up the spaghetti squashes with the turkey mixture and top with mozzarella cheese.
  9. Place back in the oven for 5 minutes and then broil for one minute to make the cheese golden brown.
  10. Enjoy!
This makes great leftovers! This cooked enough for my fiance and I to have it for dinner and for lunch the following day!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Think twice before indulging in Halloween candy tonight! They have a lot more calories and fat than you think!

Gym Motivation of the Day

Back when I was overweight, I used to sit and research fad diets, best foods to burn fat, juice cleanses, detox plans and anything that promised to make me lose weight as fast as possible.  I just wanted a quick fix that would make the extra weight disappear.  I would read reviews and spend so much money on diet pills and nutrition plans, then get so upset when they didn't work.

I was willing to waste all of my time looking for the secret to lose weight only to realize, there is no secret.  Good eating habits, moderation, water and exercise.  There is no secret diet pills or quick fixes that is going to help you lose weight and get in shape.  All that time I wasted researching, I could have been in the gym and eating right.

There is no secret.  The more time I spend in the gym and eating right, I am realizing that you can do anything you want if you are willing to work for it.  You can lose weight, you can get in shape, you can be the person you were meant to be as long as you put in the time and work for it.

This is what is motivating me today:

I want to look amazing in my wedding dress.
I want to rock a bikini on my honeymoon.
I want to feel confident about myself.
I want to reach my goal weight.
I want to feel comfortable in anything I wear.
I want to be healthy.
I want my muffin top to go away.
I want to be able to work on toning up, rather than losing fat.
I want to have defined muscles.
I want to do it for myself, I am worth it.

Happy Gymming!

Weekend Workout - Triceps and Biceps

Overall, this weekend was a good one.  Tom and I went to a marriage seminar at our church called 'Soulmates' and managed to get in a car accident during the lunch break.  Thankfully everyone is ok and Tom's car still works and just has some physical damage.  We were still able to make it back to the marriage seminar only ten minutes late! Tom and I did a little shopping that evening and I finally gave in and bought some lifting gloves and I found a cute long sleeved workout top.  Our new gym is so cold so I have to wear long sleeves while I warm up.

On Sunday, I had a lot of wedding stuff to do.  I had an appointment to look at bridesmaid dresses, needed to find shoes for my bridesmaids and flower girl dresses.  Before I left for my errands, Tom and I hit the gym.  I have been combining C4 and MRM Driven, gives me such a great boost before my workout! We did 25 minutes of cardio and then we did two bicep and tricep supersets.  We didn't have a lot of time, but we both got in a solid workout.  My triceps are so sore today! We made it home with 25 minutes to spare so we decided to cook up some eggs and turkey bacon!

Sunday's Workout

25 minutes on the Elipticall

Superset #1 (4 reps)
12 Straight Bar Bicep Curls
12 Tricep Pull Overs

Superset #2 (3 reps)
15 Hammer Curls
15 Tricep Pull Downs

Hope you had a great weekend!

October 22, 2013

Last night was one of those nights that I just wanted to cook dinner and relax.  My weekend's are so busy lately, full of wedding planning! Tom and I agreed earlier in the day that we would go to the gym in the evening together.  We planned on doing a short cardio session followed by three tricep/chest supersets.

When I got home, going to the gym was the last thing I wanted to do!  I complained to Tom about not wanting to go to the gym and his response was, "You don't have to go, but I am still going".  I figured there was no point to skip the gym if he was still planning on going.  Plus, I told him I would go with him!

We walked together to the gym, did a short cardio session and then did chest press with dumbells, tricep pull downs, flys, tricep dips, incline chest press and tricep extensions.  We went to the gym with a plan, supersetted our workouts, took very few breaks and we were in and out in less than 30 minutes.  My arms felt like noodles when we left the gym.

Sometimes I forget that workouts don't have to be hours long.  You don't have to go to the gym twice a day or do hours of cardio to get a good workout.  Before I met Tom, I had no idea what a 'superset' was.  A superset is when you perform two exercises without a break in between.  For example, last night we supersetted dumbell chest press with tricep pulldowns.  So I did 12 reps on the chest press, switched and did 12 reps on the tricep pulldown and did this three times.

Last night's workout:

Eliptical for 10 minutes

Superset #1 (3 sets)
12 reps dumbell chest press
12 reps tricep pulldowns

Superset #2 (3 sets)
12 reps chest flys
12 reps tricep dips

Superset #3 (2 sets)
12 reps incline chest press
12 reps tricep extension

Supersets are a great way to increase the intensity of your workouts and also to shock your muscles if you are experiencing a plateau. I feel like I get a better workout when I superset my lifts because my heart rate stays elevated longer and my muscles don't get a break in between lifts.  I also love that it saves so much time! I once read another blog and the woman mentioned how she doesn't workout more than 30 minutes a day (and she looks great!).  I never understood how that was possible, until now.

The only bad workout is the one you didn't do! So glad I went to the gym last night.  Only took 30 minutes to get a great workout!

Busy, Busy, Busy

Long time, no blog! Wedding planning and moving has consumed a majority of my time lately.  Wanted to share a few pics with you though!

For my birthday, two months ago, my mom gave me a barbecue.  Since I knew I would be moving, I decided to wait to set it up before I got settled in at my new place.  My fiance and my brother set up the barbecue for me last weekend.  I can't believe I have lived this long without a barbecue!

Besides setting up the barbecue, last weekend was full of wins.  As I have mentioned in a previous post, I have always dreaded buying slacks.  Last year, my slacks were a size 12 and were held together by safety pins.  I should have been wearing a size 14, if not even larger.  A few months ago I was able to downsize to a size 10. I have been wearing my size 10's for way too long now and they were hanging off of me.  Last weekend, I went and finally tried on new slacks at The Limited.  I am now comfortably wearing a size 6!!!  I can't even remember the last time I have worn a size 6 in pants!

So thankful I decided to change my life a year ago.  Size 12-14 to a size 6 and I couldn't be happier!

More to update later!

Out With the Old, In With the New

I moved into my apartment almost three an a half years ago.  Over the years, I have gained weight, lost weight, gained again and lost again.  With so much fluctuation, I have accumulated quite a bit of clothing.  In about a month, I will be moving again.  I tend to hold on to clothing far longer than I should, but I figured this move is a good excuse to try on every clothing article and donate what I don't need.  So this weekend, that is exactly what I did.  I stood in front of the mirror and literally tried on every single item in my closet.

As I gained weight, I bought larger sizes but for some reason, I couldn't get myself to throw away all of the clothes that were too small for me. Lately, I have used those items to gauge my weight loss. Every now an then, especially when I am not feeling motivated, I will go in my closet and try on an item of clothing that used to be too small.  There is nothing better than trying on a pair of pants that used to be too small and then finally being able to comfortably button them.

The strange thing is, even though these items of clothing help motivate me, I still can't get myself to wear any of them even though they all fit (or are too big).  They remind me of my old self.  The old girl who used to eat junk food all night, who was too lazy to workout, who was depressed and who did not have any confidence in herself.  I am so thankful I fit into my old clothes again, but as I tried everything on this weekend, I realized I am ready to move on from them.

I have proven to myself that I am better than I once was.  I am fit, healthy, happy, in love and I have completely changed the way I view life. I don't feel the need to hold on to my clothes anymore.  I had a goal and that was to be able to fit into all of my old clothes from college.  I achieved that.  Now, I feel like it is time to donate those clothes and make room for new clothes.

I donated five bags of clothes that are too big for me now and no longer reflect who I am.  I went shopping afterwards and bought myself a couple of new items.  A pair of skinny jeans (my first pair ever!), a couple of  long sleeve tops and a new pair of shoes.  A year ago, I would have never bought any of the clothes I bought this weekend because I had no confidence in my appearance and chose to hide under my clothes.

Goodbye old clothes, I am moving on!

Hope you had a great weekend!

My Body Shaper

This is my shaper, one of my many shapers. Most people don't go around posting pictures of their under garments, but this particular under garment has been important to me.  This was the first shaper I ever purchased.  Being fat is really uncomfortable, but this shaper made me feel ok in my own skin and hid my ever present muffin top.

I have worn a shaper every single day for the last two years.  Everyday, no matter what.  I literally would purchase clothing around my shapers.  Meaning, I never bought tank tops or anything strapless because I couldn't wear my shaper with it.  How pathetic.  I was so attached to these shapers, yet I was also so embarrassed by them. Although these shapers gave me confidence and comfort, they also made me realize how much weight I had actually gained.  I wouldn't need a shaper if I hadn't gained all this weight.

So for the last two years, I have worn a shaper. One of my many goals of losing weight was to 'burn my shaper'.  I am so sick of having to wear this tight, constricting shaper every single day of my life. This week, however, I made a decision.  No more shapers.  Enough is enough.  I have lost almost 50 lbs and I don't need to hide behind my shapers anymore.  I don't need a shaper to give me confidence to leave the house anymore. So, for the last three days, I have not worn my shaper.  Let me tell you, I feel so FREE! I forgot how good it felt to not need a shaper, to have enough confidence without one.  Want to know the coolest part? With or without my shaper, I don't have a muffin top anymore.  I love it.

This first picture was taken last October, right when I made the decision to lose weight. Second picture is today, August 2nd.
This first picture was taken July 2011, right when I started to gain all of my weight.  Second picture is today, August 2nd.  So much happier!

G.L.O.P. : Get Lots of Protein!

This is not the most visually appealing meal and the recipe name certainly doesn't help, but I promise, it tastes so good! I found this recipe on

G.L.O.P. stands for Get Lots of Protein.  This meal is very low in fat and contains a lot of protein.  Great all by itself but could also be used in tacos!

  • 16 oz. fat-free ground turkey breast
  • 1 boil-in-bag instant long-grain brown rice packages
  • 16 oz. jar salsa
  • 8 oz. fat free cottage cheese (small curd)

  1. Cook ground turkey over stove top.
  2. One minutes before turkey is fully cooked, add in salsa and simmer until fully cooked.
  3. Meanwhile, cook rice.
  4. Add rice and cottage cheese to turkey mixture.
  5. Enjoy!
This makes about six servings and is delicious!

    Weight Lifting

In the past few weeks, I have spent more time lifting weights than I have doing cardio.  I used to be a cardio queen.  Hour on the elliptical, followed by fifteen minutes of weight lifting.  My initial goal was to burn fat and lose weight, then I figured I could focus on lifting weights and toning up.  In the last month or so, even though I have not lost any weight, I am noticing changes in my body. My body is starting to get a little bit of definition.  I can see muscles I have never been able to see before.

Maybe I am not losing weight because I am building muscle, which weighs less than fat.  Maybe I truly am plateauing.  Not really sure at this point.  But I am really liking the changes I can see in myself ever since I have started weight lifting more.

I posted this picture above for two reasons.  First was just to show my progress in the last six months.  Second was to prove that lifting weights is not going to make you look like a huge body builder.  I was talking to a girl a few months back about exercising.  She wanted to get in shape again and said she was going to start running a few days a week.  I mentioned lifting weights and she laughed.  She told me she is already muscular and weight lifting will make her look huge.  What girls don't realize is weight lifting can actually help you lose weight.  The more muscle you have on your body, the more calories your body will burn at rest.  Weight lifting will help you lose weight and it won't make you look big and bulky!

    Happy Gymming!

    July 29, 2013

My weight has officially been the same for almost two months.  I feel like I am doing everything right, working out, eating healthy, taking supplements and getting enough sleep.  I can't help but feel a little bit frustrated when I step on the scale each week and see no change.  My clothes fit slightly different and I do feel more muscular than I did a couple months ago, but I still get a lot of satisfaction when I see the number on the scale go down.

It is so easy to get discouraged during a weight loss plateau. I plateaued December through almost February and I remember feeling so incredibly frustrated.  Once I broke through the plateau, I lost twenty pounds fairly quickly.  I know I will eventually break through this plateau just as I did the last one, but I am starting to get very impatient.

Tom and I leave for Hawaii in a little over a month.  My goal was to loose another ten pounds before Hawaii, which I initially thought would be very easy.  Each day that goes by, I am getting more nervous that I might not achieve my goal.

Just as I was feeling discouraged, I was given a wake up call.  Tom and I missed our Friday night date, so we went to happy hour on Saturday after our workout.  I used to frequent this particular restaurant when I was overweight and hadn't been there in a while.  We went and sat in the bar and the host followed us to our table with menus.  Before she left, she asked if I used to come in to the restaurant a lot a while ago.  Yes, I used to be a regular. She said, 'You've lost weight, haven't you?".  Why yes, yes I have! She asked how much weight I had lost and told me I looked really great.

Just as I was feeling discouraged by my plateau, I was reminded that I have come a long ways and I should be proud of myself.  There is no finish line when it comes to getting healthy and in shape.  Even when I get to my goal weight, I will always have to workout, eat healthy and maintain my weight.  Fitness isn't something that ever ends, it is a lifestyle.

I will probably have several more plateaus and just as I did the last one, I will break through them all.  Plateaus should make me work harder, not discourage me.  I have come a long way from where I once was and I really need to be proud of myself.

I am going to start mixing up my workouts and my calories again so I can start losing weight again.  I will break through this plateau!

    Gym Motivation of the Day

Happy Monday! I officially leave for Hawaii in less than two months and I have been trying to find more dresses and tank tops to take with me.  Found these two dresses today, together they were $32! I love being able to walk into a store, grab a medium and be totally confident that it will fit me.  Sometimes the mediums are even too big for me! No complaints!

Today is chest and tri's.  I am really working hard to lose the rest of this fat and to build muscle. My weight has been the same for almost two month now, really looking forward to breaking through my plateau!

    Happy Gymming!

    Nutrition and Shopping Tips

I have been working out pretty hard lately with Tom.  We have been roughly following the MFT28 on  This workout plan is pretty intense and we are both very exhausted and sore after each workout.  Throughout this weight loss journey, I have always worked out alone.  Even when Tom and I would go to the gym together, we usually worked out separately.  I am coming to realize how much I enjoy having a workout buddy.  He holds me accountable, helps me with my form, pushes me to do heavier weight and encourages me to do that one last rep.

Lately, Tom and I have been trying to eat a little healthier.  We both realized we have been eating out more than usual and we really want to get back on track.  Tom shared this video with me from last night:

This video is very informative about eating healthy, how to grocery shop and what types of food to buy when  following a plan.

After we went grocery shopping, we did a quick meal prep.  One pound of lean ground turkey, five eggs, one red pepper, Lawry;s seasoning salt and three white sweet potatoes.  This made two lunches for both Tom and I.  We bought all the ingredients for less than ten dollars.  Over 40 grams of protein and under 10 carbohydrates.

Ground Turkey (99% Fat Free), Eggs, Red Pepper and 1/2 a White Sweet Potato
Also, wanted to share that I bought my first pair of shorts this weekend.  I have an upcoming vacation that I will need clothes for warm weather, so I bought these shorts.  I can't even remember the last time I wore a pair of jean shorts!

Bought my first pair of years!
    Check me out on Facebook!

    Gym Motivation of the Day

I love this quote! When I first started going to the gym, I felt like I spent more time being jealous of the other fit girls at the gym than I did on actually working out.  Constantly comparing myself to them.  I have come to the realization that I am never going to look like the other girls at the gym.  Why?  Because they aren't me.  I have finally learned that the only competition I have is the person staring back at me in the mirror.  Me, myself and I.  I just need to be better than the person I was yesterday.

    Happy Gymming!
